I [fleur de lis] The Holidays!
Have I mentioned that I'm going to be in this fun show happening here in Louisville, sponsored by The Late Seating at Actor's Theater? The I [fleur de lis] The Holidays Party will be THIS Friday, November 2nd, starting at 8:30pm (after the 7:30pm performance of The Santaland Diaries - yes, the hilarious David Sedaris tale). It's the opening night party for The Santaland Diaries with cash bar, light nibbles, music and an Under $25 Art Sale. That's where I'll be! Mingle with the cast, crew and staff of David Sedaris' anti-holiday treat and wrap up your dreaded holiday shopping early. Tickets to the party are free with purchase of ticket to the performance, or $5 without. It sounds like a fabulous time - I'm really looking forward to it!

More of my favorite t-shirts...
I promise I am not turning this into a shopping blog, but I am trying to make it more interesting to read, while at the same time having it still be mostly about me!
So I'm continuing on the theme of local (New Orleans) t-shirts and t-shirt designers that I love. I mentioned Dirty Coast and TrumpeTees already. Well, the other day I got a MySpace message from the good folks over at Metro Three that they have a few new designs, and I think I really need to get one of them: "I Left My Heart In New Orleans." It's on a black t (can't go wrong there), and shows the New Orleans skyline with a big sunburst heart above it. I love it! Next time I'm in town, I'll have to drop by their shop on Magazine Street and pick one up. I can never get enough New Orleans-themed t-shirts!
Their new "Whooo-Dat" shirt is pretty funny (I am growing a tad bit weary of the hipster owl, but this is a good use of it), and I never did get one of their now-classic "Make Levees Not War" shirts (kept trying, but they were always out of my size in the brown). Did you know that it comes in a tote bag now too?
And if you act fast, you can get FREE SHIPPING on your Metro Three orders. Just type "freeshippingnow" in the Voucher section at the start of your checkout. No telling how long this offer will be valid, but for now, buy as much as you want, and get it shipped for free! I did manage, however, to finally obtain one of my other long-time coveted New Orleans shirts, a while back - a Defend New Orleans shirt, the one with the microphone, silver print on black. Defend New Orleans mastermind Jac Currie was vending at one of the New Orleans Craft Mafia Crescent City Craft Markets, and we were able to negotiate a trade (he's now the proud owner/wearer of one of my "Old School" cassette t-shirts). I've always loved Jac's stuff, from way back in the days of Turncoats on Magazine Street, which is how I originally met him. And I just think it's wonderful, what he's been able to do with Defend New Orleans, turning it into a non-profit tool to promote the city. Check out the new Defend New Orleans Blog, and keep an eye out for DNO Books shows and events around town.

These are some of my new line of smaller stencil clocks, made on 45rpm singles instead of full-size 12-inch LPs. Better hurry and get them fast! Click the pic to go right to my Etsy shop.
And what's on my agenda for the rest of October? Mostly just stocking up for the holidays, adding more items to my Etsy shop and website, and getting a box or two of goodies together to ship off to Craftland.

Cool Sites!
Today's post is really just an opportunity for me to gush about a couple of cool sites that I love. I know this isn't a shopping blog, but they are both related to what I do, and I figure, if you like what I do, then you might like them too!
Stencil 1 is just about the most brilliant idea for a business that I wish I'd thought of... EVER. Their entire biz is about selling pre-cut stencils with pop-culture designs on them, so anyone can discover the fun and infectiousness of stencilling. I've been asked once or twice to sell one of my stencils, but it never really occurred to me that THAT could be the basis of a business. (It does help to have a laser cutter, I'll point out - fingers get worn out pretty easily cutting stencils by hand!) And Stencil 1's graphics are really cool, kinda similar to what I do - classic, basic designs of pop culture imagery. Stuff like turntables and cassettes and skull-and-crossbones and birds and all kinds of fun objects and animals. Great minds think alike, I guess!
My favorite part of their site, though, is all the how-to videos. Martha Stewart stencilling shirts with Cynthia Nixon is precious, but all the DIYers on YouTube are better. Maybe if my Etsy how-to-stencil video ever goes up, I can get them to add it to their page! They also have downloadable instructions for stencilling and bleach-stencilling processes that are pretty helpful. And check out their gallery page for ideas of all kinds of things you can stencil. Such a great site!
The second site is a NOLA-local site, fellow t-shirt designers Dirty Coast. I've loved their designs for a few years now - they started right before Hurricane Katrina, but have blown up after the storm. I think my favorite designs they've done include "I Am New Orleans" and "Be A New Orleanian. wherever you are." But I think they've got a lot of clever slogans and great design going.
Dirty Coast has recently added some new designs by their friends at TrumpeTees. Their new "Jolly Louis" design is my new favorite - I must have one of those! I love it. So smart - Louis Armstrong's face with a crossbones of trumpets. Brilliant, really. I really like their "Forever Folk" design, too. I'll be anxious to see more designs from the TrumpeTees folks.
I should mention that many of the Dirty Coast designs are being carried by our friends over at Storyville, both in their brick and mortar stores in Baton Rouge and Austin (and soon Chapel Hill and hopefully New Orleans!), as well as via their online store, WearYourStory.com. Stay tuned for announcements about some of MY designs going up on Storyville's site and in their stores, very very soon!

Freret Market Recap
Well, it's been a whirlwind few days in New Orleans, but I'm happy to report that the Freret Street Market went really well for me! It was hot as hell, and my poor girlfriend Fae (in bottom picture below) got really sunburnt, but despite the recurring threat of rain and some pretty strong winds, it ended up being a pretty nice day. Attendance was fairly strong (maybe not as crazy as September's, being the debut month, but still steady), and business was good. Plus the diversity of artists, farmers and flea marketers, all the great food, and awesome bands - it was a fun day all around. Big thanks to everyone who helped organize the market. I look forward to participating in it again - hopefully in December!
I was also happy to run into fellow/sister Etsians Kerri and Heather (rustchic, bayousalvage and nolasalvage), inexplicable confetti, and yabettasupadont. Plus I finally got to meet Mr. NOLA Rising, Michael Dingler (and family!). Sadly, I was too busy in my own booth to go pour through his, so I somehow managed to not end up with any of his awesome stuff... but I have a feeling I'll be seeing more of him soon!
My time here in NOLA is almost over, but I find out in a few weeks if I've been accepted to Festivus this year or not, so stay tuned for updates about that. If I am accepted, I'll be back in NOLA for a few weeks in December and most likely participating in several markets around town while I'm here.
